On Thursday, Oct 25th, RHS members from Swarthmore and Haverford visited Susquehanna International Group (SIG) at the firm’s headquarters in Bala Cynwyd, PA.

Following a tour through the headquarters’ facilities and trading floor, we were seated in the headquarters conference room, where two presentations and workshops were delivered by senior members of the firm. Stacey Gilbert, who works on the derivatives strategy team at SIG, first introduced the identity and philosophy of the firm. Using the “theory of poker” as an analogy for the trading strategy at SIG, Stacey explained how the company find its edge and control its risk in options trading. She also led us through a series of games, whereby she taught important concepts of investing. Following Stacy’s presentation, Jen and Leesa, who work on Buy-side research, spoke extensively about the process and considerations involved in equities research.

By describing how a buy/sell recommendation was made using a real-world case study, Jen and Leesa illustrated how SIG’s investment strategy plays out in its buy/sell decisions. At the end of the session, a panel of SIG members shared with us their personal experience at the firm and provided us with valuable advice.

As sophomores and juniors who are exploring the realm of finance, we appreciate the unique opportunity to hear directly from experienced professionals about their work and insights into the industry. Sitting in the same room and connecting with senior members of SIG as well as past interns of the company offered us diverse perspectives. The engaging activities helped us learn essential concepts and provided us with new lenses to view the market. Moreover, it is fascinating to see how the classroom concepts probability plays out in investment in the real world.

This visit has broadened my knowledge in finance, and I am so glad for this opportunity.
